FIPRESCI Jury Statement at the 25th “Listapad” Film Festival

The FIPRESCI jury at the 25th edition of the Minsk International Film Festival “Listapad” regret to have learned that independent critics and industry representatives from Belarus are no longer actively part of the national competition’s selection committee at “Listapad”. In the long term, Belorussian cinema will only be fully represented at the event if its diversity is matched by the diversity of the bodies judging it. We thus hope the Ministry of Culture will consider opening up the national competition’s selection committee to help ensure that “Listapad” upholds its unique and international prestige as an event that celebrates the diverse cinemas of both the world, and Belarus.

The statement is also reported on festival website, on public and independent media.
You can see some infographics on festival history here and here's some prehistory of the conflict. I'm just borrowing it from BelSat. Even though I'm far from being a fan of their website the information seems to be presented accurately:

Listapad directorate loses right to select films for national competition

The last say on which film will get into the national competition program of the Minsk International Film Festival Lispad will be made by a special commission. It is headed by Deputy Minister of Culture Iryna Dryha.

“The difference this year is that the commission did not include representatives of the directorate and there were significantly fewer film critics this time,” program director of the national competition Mikalai Laurenyuk said during the press conference. “While earlier the commission included film-makers, film critics, representatives of the directorate and, of course, the Ministry of Culture, now there are many more representatives of state bodies.”

First Deputy Minister of Culture Iryna Dryha noted that the national competition is one of the most important ones and that is why it was decided to expand the range of individuals who will select this program.

“The commission took into account the recommendations of the Directorate, while film experts, distributors, and even philosophers and sociologists took part in its work. The sole purpose of the innovation is to relieve the tension that is present in the film environment regarding the selection of films,” said Dryha.

“This will not be beneficial for the festival,” said Listapad Director Anzhelika Krasheuskaya.

The whole affair was also extensively reported on many other news media in Russian (for example here). Even though according to Iryna Dryha the aim of so called innovation was to relieve the alleged tension the actual result was several films' withdrawal from competition in protest (here and here).
